Former Editor of the Sunday Leader Fedrica Jansz and the Sunday Leader has been ordered to pay a sum of 250 million rupees as compensation to Defense Secretary Ghotabhaya Rajapaksa for defamation.
This was when the case in this regard was taken up before Mount Lavinia District Court Judge Priyantha Fernando.
Meanwhile the Mount Lavinia District Court also issued a permanent injunction order preventing articles bearing odium towards Secretary of Defense Ghotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Moreover the court case filed by the Ceylon Tobacco Company against Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena which challenges packaging rules designed to deter smokers was heard at the Appeals Court today.
The regulations gazetted by the Health Ministry last August require cigarette sellers to have images illustrating the danger of smoking to health in their packaging material.
Currently, the health warning is restricted to words.
The new rules had been promulgated under the Tobacco Products Labelling and Packaging rules gazetted on August 8th.
However when taken up today hearing of the case was postponed until the 05th of December.
Meanwhile a voluntary organization staged a peaceful protest before the Fort Railway station today denouncing the court case filed against Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena.
Expressing his views in this regard to our news team, Minister Sirisena added that he would not be intimidated by multinational companies which thwarted the interests of the public.
