It has been revealed that a cough linctus which has been temporarily banned from sale is still being sold at private pharmacies despite an imposed ban.

According to the Ministry of Health complaints in this regard have been received at Cosmetic Devices & Drugs Regulatory Authority.

The ministry notes that subsequent to the ban imposed, pharmacy owners are engaged in the sale of remnant stocks.

Raids are being carried out on errant pharmacy owners who continue selling the syrup despite bans imposed, which had caused around 7 deaths in the recent past due to excessive consumption.

Meanwhile a National Health Week is due to be observed from the 10th of December to the 17th.

During the course of the National Health Week, the National Plan on Health will also be unveiled.

According to Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena the year 2013 will be named the year for the prevention of non communicable disease.

The Minister made this observation while addressing the Convention of Provincial Health Ministers which was held at the auditorium of the National Blood Bank today.
