Disaster situation declared in 5 Districts; reported deaths increase to 6

The Disaster Management Centre states that disaster conditions exist within 5 districts due to the inclement weather which continues to affect the island.

According to the Deputy Media Director of the DMC Sarath Lal Kumara disaster situations have been pronounced within the districts of Monaragala, Hambanthota, Nuwara Eliya, Galle & Mathara.

Further speaking he also noted that the inclement weather had claimed the lives of 6 individuals within the period of a week.

One death each has been reported from Rathnapura, Ambalanthota & Dambulla.

Moreover 3 deaths are being reported from Neluwa-Galle when water currents had carried away 3 individuals.

Deputy Media Director of the DMC Sarath Lal Kumara expressed the following views to our news team regarding the disaster situation at hand.

Meanwhile, The Galle District Disaster Management Centre stated that due to the prevailing inclement weather conditions the water level of the Ging river has increased leaving several roads inundated.

Accordingly Neluwa-Kosmulla, Dellawa-Thawalama and Udugama-Thawalama areas are reported to be inundated.

The Matara District Disaster Management Centre stated that transportation along the Kamburupitiya – Mulatiyana road and Makandura and Rang-se-goda in the district have been hindered due to flood waters.

Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology has forecast thundershowers for most parts of the island this evening.
