Southern Expressway Sri Lanka's first expressway has earned around 950 million rupees since its opening a year ago.
Deputy Ports and Highways Minister Nirmala Kotelawala said that the toll highway has earned a monthly income of around 83 to 85 million rupees.
He also stated that around 3.3 million vehicles travelled on the Southern Expressway since its opening.
The government therefore, says the Expressway is likely to earn a 1 billion rupees income this year.
The 95-km four-lane highway from Kottawa in Colombo district to Galle constructed at a cost of around 70 billion rupees was opened on November 27th, 2011.
It is to be extended to Matara from Galle under the second phase.
