The police recovered several artefacts stolen from the ruins of the Ampara - Mottiyagala ancient temple site from a house in the Thirukkovil region today.

The Thirukkovil police stated that several ancient rings and a gold ornament were among the items recovered.

One suspect was arrested along with the artefacts and a total of 9 suspects have been arrested in connection with this case so far.

However, the police allege that the department of archaeology did not take action at the required time to ensure the safety of this ancient temple site.

SSP Prishantha Jayakody further stated that the department of archaeology had not made any clarification in this regard.
