The department of railways state that following a collision between a trishaw and a train at the Mahawa Ambanpola Kirimatiyana unprotected level crossing, all 7 individuals travelling in the trishaw were killed.
Speaking to our news team, Planning Director of Railways, Vijaya Samarasinghe stated that the trishaw had collided with the inter city express train plying the Colombo - Omanthe route at approximately 9.10am.
The deceased which included two children have been identified as residents of the Biyagama - Heiyanthuduwa region.
The trishaw had been dragged for approximately 300 meters by the train following the collision.
A spokesperson of the Ambanpola hospital stated that two of the bodies have been placed at the hospital.
Upon inquiry by our news team, Director of Railways, Vijaya Samarasinghe stated that nearly 900 unprotected level crossings are scattered around the island and that a program has already been initiated to fix railway gates to these unprotected level crossings.
