4 elephants have been killed in the Punani area on the Walachchena Polonnaruwa main route due to electrocution.

The beasts had been killed when a high tension electricity line had collapsed on them.

When inquired Director General of Wild Life H.D. Rathnayeke noted that the elephants had been hit by the high tension lines at a spot where repairs were being carried out.

According to Rathnayeke the Ceylon Electricity Board has already been notified.

When inquired by Deputy Minister of Wold Life S.M. Chandrasena in this regard during a media briefing which was held this afternoon the following was the reply filed by the deputy minister.



Moreover queries were directed at the Deputy Minister even in parliament today concerning the various threats humans face due to wild elephants.

The following reply was filed by the Deputy Minister of Wild Life in reply to a query raised by an UNP MP in parliament.
