Vendors of the Mathara-Kotuwegoda weekly fair engaged in a protest this morning bringing vehicular traffic on the Mathara-Tangalle highway to a standstill.
Protesters charged that authorities had drawn plans to construct a vehicle park at the premises of the Kotuwegoda Public Fair grounds.
According to our correspondent the protest had caused considerable traffic congestion on the route for nearly an hour.
Chairman of the Mathara Public Traders Association S.W. Ronnie Sumithra meanwhile shelled authorities with the following allegations.
Subsequently the protesters were escorted for discussions with the Mayor of Mathara with the intervention of Mathara District SSP Deshabandu Thennakoon.
According to our correspondent, based on pledges that an alternative would be provided tomorrow from the end of authorities, the protesters had dispersed.
However Deputy Director of the Mathara District Urban Development Authority Lalith Wijerathna the original aim of the initiative had been to relocate the weekly fair to the premises of the Kotuwegoda trading complex.
