The likelihood of a royal pardon for Rizana Nafeek, the Sri Lankan housemaid who has been in a Saudi death row since 2007 has increased, with the recent announcement by the Saudi Crown Prince, Salman bin Abdul, that death row prisoners would be pardoned as a meritorious act to bring blessings on ailing King Abdullah Bin Abdul.

Prince Salman, had made the pardon announcement a few days ago.

Sri Lankan authorities, who have been working on the release of Rizana, believe the maid would be among those who would receive a royal pardon.

Rizana was sentenced to death on 16th June 2007, by a three-member bench at the Dawadmi High Court for killing the newborn baby she was entrusted to look after, in the absence of her Saudi employers.
