The Police Media spokesman's office says that 24 skulls and bone fragments were recovered in the excavations carried out at the Matale General Hospital premises.
Human bone fragments were recovered in coincidence with activities for preparing the ground for setting up a Bio Gas Unit on the 26th of last month.
Removing of human bone fragments that had surfaced as a result of the excavations began in the presence of Matale District Magistrate Chaturikaa de Silva yesterday.
While several human bone fragments were found at a depth of about five feet on the occasion the excavations were carried for the first time, the Matale District Magistrate inspected the said location and ordered the District Court Medical Officer to investigate and submit a report.
Further excavations are scheduled to be carried out after the bone fragments already found are removed from the premises.
Further investigations are being carried out for finding out whether this is a cemetery used in ancient times or a mass grave.
