A spokesperson for the Wimalasurendra power plant states that power generation activities at the plant have been temporarily suspended due to an explosion of a voltage transformer within the plant.
According to sources power generation activities at the Wimalasurendra power plant are assisted by two voltage transformers which operate in tandem.
Hence operations of both transformers have come to a standstill followed by the collapse of one of the transformers which is said to have occurred last evening.
At present the 50 megawatts of electricity is synchronised to the national grid through the Wimalsurendra power plant.
Accordingly a 3 to 4 million rupees loss is incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board due to the breakdown at the Wimalasurendra power plant.
Deputy Minister of Power & Energy Premalal Jayasekara expressing his views to our news team made further clarifications regarding the failure of the power plant.
