The Sri Lanka Bar Association states that the Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to investigate the impeachment against the chief justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayaka is not in accordance with the constitution.
The SLBA also state that the impeachment is baseless and that the PSC does not have jurisdiction to inquire into such charges.
Further the SLBA stated that proceeding with the impeachment process would impede the independence of the judiciary, Rule of Law, the basic principals of democracy and fundamental rights.
Therefore the SLBA has decided to convene a special general meeting on the 14th of this month.
During this meeting the SLBA hopes to pass a resolution with regard to the to the impeachment process.
The proposal states that the SLBA will not recognize the removal of the incumbent chief justice and the appointing of a new chief justice.
The SLBA is also preparing to not appear before a new chief justice.
The proposal includes notifying the international community regarding the impeachment process against the chief justice and it states that the SLBA is requesting the United Nations, Commonwealth and the International Bar Association to not recognize any new appointee to the office of chief justice.
