The police states that the 6 Jaffna University students who were arrested are being held and questioned under detention orders.

Police media spokesperson SSP Prishantha Jayakody stated that information has been received that these 6 students took part in the protest in front of the Jaffna University held the day after these students attempted to commemorate the LTTE Heroes Day on the 27th of last month.

These 6 students were arrested based on the information supplied by the 3 students arrested earlier in connection with the protest.

Speaking further SSP Jayakody stated that once the vice chancellor of the Jaffna University was informed, he had brought the 6 students and handed them over to the Police Terrorist Investigation Department.

4 other students were arrested in connection with this incident and 3 of them are currently being questioned while being detained.

The chief convenor of the Inter University students’ Union Sanjeewa Bandara made the following statement regarding the arrests.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday the leader of the New Samasamaja Party Professor Wickramabahu Karunarathne expressed his disapproval regarding the arrests.
