Senior Council S.L. Gunasekara states that the President has not been granted provisions by the countries' constitution to appoint an independent committee to re-investigate the impeachment motion filed against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranaike.
However former Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Professor Nalin De Silva opposes the views of Senior Council S.L. Gunasekara stating that the president indeed has been permitted provisions by the constitution to appoint an independent committee in this regard.
Speaking yesterday President Mahinda Rajapaksa noted that he was prepared to appoint an independent committee to re-investigate the report of the impeachment motion filed against Chief Justice Dr Shirani Bandaranaike.
According to President Rajapaksa an independent committee will investigate the impeachment report.

Meanwhile General Secretary of the United National Party MP Thissa Aththanayeke added that the parties working committee today had endorsed a proposal which calls for the appointment of a panel of commonwealth judges to re-investigate the charges levelled against the Chief justice in the impeachment motion filed against her.
