Sri Lanka expressed its condolences to the United States regarding the shootings which took place at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, where 27 persons, including 20 innocent little children were tragically gunned down.

President Mahidna Rajapaksa in his letter to President Barack Obama stated that he was greatly saddened to hear the news of the shoot-out.

President Rajapaksa conveyed his personal heartfelt sympathies to President Obama and stated that the people and the Government of Sri Lanka express their sincere condolences to the Government and the people of the United States at this tragic moment.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa also stated "Our thoughts and prayers are with the parents and siblings of the children who lost their lives, as well as the families of the six adults who were killed".
