Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris states that a joint committee has been appointed between Sri Lanka & Australia, in order to prevent human trafficking.

Visiting Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr who is currently in the island met with Minister G.L. Peiris this morning at the premises of the Ministry of External affairs.

Subsequently a media briefing was held at the premises of the ministry.

Meanwhile during this year alone 16,770 illegal migrants have reached Australian soil, out of which 6360 are considered to be Sri Lankan nationals.

According to Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bob Carr illegal Sri Lanka migrants arriving in Australia hereafter would be deported immediately prior to the expiration of 72 hours.

A meeting between President Mahinda Rajapakse and Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr took place at Temple Trees today.

Bilateral relations were the main subject of the discussion.

During the discussion the Australian Foreign Minister brought up the issue of illegal immigrants.
