A token strike was initiated islandwide by the nursing staff from 7a.m. today.

President of the Government Nursing Officers Association Saman Rathnapriya stated that the strike was launched based on several unfulfilled demands.

However, nurses at Lady Ridgeway Childrens’ Hospital, Castle Street Maternity Hospital, De Soysa Hosiptal for Women and Maharagama Cancer Hospital are not taking part in this strike.

President of the GNOA Saman Rathnapriya expressing his views had this to say.

He further stated that the government had not declared a disaster situation in the country as yet. However, if it is declared, the GNOA will consider the situation.

State Nurses Association states that the strike launched by the government nurses during a time of crisis cannot be accepted.

The Chariman of SNA Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero stated that this is a baseless trade union action.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the All Island Nurses Union S. B. Madiwaththa stated that their union is not supporting the ongoing token strike.

However according to hospital sources, the strike launched by the GNOA has not hampered routine activities of the hospitals.
