Nursing staff throughout the island are engaged in a 24 hour token strike which commenced at 7 this morning.
Chairman of the Government Nursing Officers Association Saman Rathnapriya expressing his views to our news team noted that the strike had been launched against the non-granting of several demands.
However the strike is not in effect at the Lady Ridgeway hospital, De Soyza Maternity home, & the Maharagama Cancer Hospital.
Moreover the All Ceylon Nurses Union & the State Services Nursing Union have abstained from taking up the strike action.
Against this backdrop Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena states that at a juncture when the lives of the countries people are at stake due to the inclement weather, it is regrettable that nursing staff had adopted such a stance.
