The time frame allowed for the three persons committee appointed to investigate the Welikada prison conflict has been extended by two months.
Secretary to the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms G. S. Withanage stated to our news team that this decision was taken by the minister in response to a request made by the committee.
On the 9th of November a conflict took place between the inmates of Welikada prison and the prison guards.
27 inmates were killed during the clash while 40 were injured.
Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera appointed a three person committee led by a retired high court judge and granted 3 weeks to submit a report.
The time period expired last Friday.
