The government has decided to increase the allowance for Research and Education provided for University teachers from 25 to 30 percent, with effect from the 1st of January.
The Ministry of Economic Development issuing a statement stated that the decision has been officially communicated to the Ministry of Higher Education by Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa.
Several circulars that were shown as a hindrance to the integrity of universities have also been removed while certain other circulars have been amended.
From January onwards an entry level university teacher will experience a 60% increase in their educational allowance while a University teacher would experience an increase of 75%.
2nd and 1st level senior teachers will experience an 80% increase will Professors will be given a 85% increase.
50% of this increase will be given in January while the rest will be given in June.
Secretary of the Federation of University Teachers Association Dr. Terrence Madujith stated that they believe that they would receive the promised increments soon.
