UNHCR classifies Lankan's for refugee status

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has listed persons suspected of LTTE links, journalists, opposition politicians, political activists, homosexual's & lesbians as being among the categories of Sri Lankan's likely to be in need of international refugee protection.

The UNHCR also advises that applications by individuals such as members of the armed forces should also be carefully considered.

These recommendations were published in the 2012 'UNHCR Eligibility Guidelines for Assessing the International Protection needs of

Asylum Seekers from Sri Lanka' & was released on Friday.
