The Disaster Management Centre said Around 222 thousand 908 people belonging to 61 thousand 254 families have been affected by bad weather the country experienced during the past few days.
Disaster Management Centre Assistant Director Lal Sarath Kumara said 42 death have been reported while 23 were injured and 12 were missing up to yesterday.
He said several main roads have also been closed due to floods and earth slips.
Polonnaruwa - Batticaloa, Vavuniya - Jaffna and Nuwara Eliya - Welimada roads have been closed due to floods while Welimada, Haputale and Maiyanganaya roads have been closed due to earth slips.
Meanwhile Irrigation Engineer of the of Kanthale M.L.M Buddhika states that concurrent to the heavy showers being experienced in the area, the 10 sluice gates of the Kanthale reservoir have been released by 3 feet each.
Moreover 8 sluice gates of the Parakrama Samudraya have been released by 6 feet.
According to the Director of the Water Management Unit of the Department of Irrigation Janaki Meegasthanne, out of 71 reservoirs coming under the purview of the Department of Irrigation 40 reservoirs have brimmed over.
However according to the Department of Meteorology the North,
North Central, Uwa, Hambanthota & Kurunegala may experience further showers.
