A new gazette notification has been issued by the Department of Motor Traffic, which contains the maximum speeds under which motor vehicles should operate.
According to Commissioner General of Motor Traffic H.S. Harischandra, motor vehicles under the new gazette notification-are expected to ply at 50 km's /h within city limits & 70 km's/h out of city limits.
However a Supreme Court order was issued previously under which police were unable to arrest drivers breeching speed limits, due to the non establishment of since speed limit signs island wide.
The Urban Development Authority in the wake of the new gazette notification has taken measures to establish speed limit signs.
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic H.S. Harischandra expressing his views to our news team noted that subsequent to the setting up of speed limit signs police would be able to arrest drivers breeching speed limits.
