President Mahinda Rajapaksa states that the teaching of love and understanding that brings the spirit of sharing, which marks the celebration of Christmas, can help in strengthening the bridges of peace, tolerance and reconciliation that are being built in our country.
In his Christmas message the President stated that the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem shows the world the importance of love extending to all, moving beyond all barriers, extending from the highest to the humblest in society, to all beings who share this earth with us, and to nature that sustains us all.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in his Christmas message stated that the teachings of Jesus Christ reflect eternal peace, co-existence and equality.
The Premier also stated that we should understand the real sense of Christmas we celebrate today, not taking it as an occasion to make merry.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in his Christmas message, stated that through the birth of Christ what was inculcated in the minds of people was peace and goodwill among all human beings.
He said a firm desire not to lose the light within ourselves will herald a meaningful Christmas.
Releasing a Christmas message JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said the treasured example in the life of Jesus Christ was His standing and struggling on behalf of implementation of justice and fairness of the suffering people.
In the message he further requests Christian devotees to convert this Christmas to a day on which they renew their life for winning that struggle for humanity,
Meanwhile, Archbishop of Colombo his Eminence Dr. Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith stated that every Christmas invites us to take a very realistic look at the society in which we live.
The Archbishop also stated that we should be mindful of the disturbing levels of disregard towards the indescribable value of life and the culture of impunity that appears to have overtaken us.
