Due to the overflowing of Malwathu Oya, a state of disaster has been declared in few areas of Mannar district.

Disaster Management Center warned that due to the rising water levels of Malwathu Oya, residents of Maradamadu, Raasamadu, Achchankulam and Katteiadamban areas should be on alert.

Mannar – Madawachchiya road and Silawathura – Murugan road have been closed due to this condition.

Deputy Director of DMC stated that even though the disaster situation due to adverse weather conditions subsided 28,000 people are still displaced.


Meanwhile, Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera stated that permission should be obtained from National Building Research Organisation when constructing their dwellings in sloped areas.

The Minister expressed these views while inspecting the damaged localities in Haputhale area.


However, meteorological department stated that rainfall is to be expected in North and East areas tonight.

Meteorologist Channa Rodrigo explained about the weather condition further as follows.
