Disaster situation subsides; threat of floods in Mannar continues.

Due to the overflowing of Malwathu Oya, a state of disaster has been declared in few areas of Mannar district.

Disaster Management Center warned that due to the rising water levels of Malwathu Oya, residents of Maradamadu, Raasamadu, Achchankulam and Katteiadamban areas should be on alert.

Mannar – Madawachchiya road and Silawathura – Murugan road have been closed due to this condition.

Disaster management centre states that Floods have affected 275 thousand 982 persons belonging to 75 thousand 234 families up to date.

34 persons have died following floods and landslides while nine are reported missing.

Nearly 144 evacuation centres have been set up in 13 districts.

However, meteorological department stated that rainfall is to be expected in North and East areas tonight.

Meteorologist Channa Rodrigo explained about the weather condition further as follows.
