Presidential spokesman Mohan Samaranayake stated that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had not decided to prorogue Parliament though a suggestion to that effect had been made by the leftist allies of the UPFA coalition.

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party and the Communist Party have said that the prorogation of Parliament was the only way to avert a crisis over the government’s impeachment motion against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake as it will cause the Parliamentary Select Committee to lapse automatically making room for a fresh inquiry, with all relevant safeguards.
