The death toll in Syria's civil war has topped 45 thousand, as peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi looked to Russia for help in his faltering new bid to bring the warring parties to the negotiating table.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said At least another 20 people including eight children were killed in tank shelling of a farming village in the north of the country.

The grim statistics added gravity to a UN warning that the humanitarian situation across the country is rapidly deteriorating.
