Presidents Spokesperson Mohan Samaranayake says that the President has no other option other than implementing the decision reached by the parliament with regard to the impeachment report against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake.
He stated that accordingly the President would take a decision with regard to the matter.
In the meantime the government information department quoting Presidents Spokesperson stated that the President has no provisions through the constitution to appoint a panel of experts to further look in to the impeachment against the Chief Justice.
Presidents Spokesperson Mohan Samaranayake stated that the President had stated on a previous occasion that a panel of experts will be appointed was to obtain views of legal experts regarding the report.
Government sources state that the President would take a final decision on the parliament’s verdict on the impeachment during the next few days and a new Chief Justice will be appointed on the 18th of this month.
Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Bar Association is preparing to once again make a request to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to reconsider the impeachment of the Chief Justice.
Secretary of the Association Attorney at Law Sanjaya Gamage speaking to our news team stated that this decision was taken at the monthly meeting of their association this morning.
He further stated that they would make this request as the President has the final say as to whether the Chief Justice should be removed or not.
However, Senior Attorney at law Gomin Dayasiri stated that although the motion with regard to the impeachment of the Chief Justice was approved in parliament, the President may or refrain from signing it.
