The elections commissioner today stated that the discovery of ballot papers of the 2010 presidential election in the Kalagedihena region was not an irregularity nor was it illegal.

 

The leader of the New Democratic Front, Sarath Fonseka and MP Jayantha Katagoda met with the elections commissioner today to inquire into the ballot papers discovered in the Nittambuwa - Kalagedihena region.

 

They also engaged in discussions regarding the registration of their party.

 

During the discussion the elections commissioner stated that he suspects that a stack of ballot papers would have fallen out of the lorry that was transporting left over ballot papers back to Colombo to be destroyed.

 

In addition the election commissioner had advised Sarath Fonseka with regard to party registration.

 

Leader of the New Democratic Front, Sarath Fonseka had the following to say in this regard.

430 ballot papers issued by the Nuwara Eliya elections office with the Swan symbol crossed off were discovered near the Kalagedihena Maha Vidyalaya on the 23rd of last month.

 

During the 2010 presidential election Sarath Fonseka contested as the presidential candidate representing the New Democratic Front, whose symbol was the swan.

 

The Attanagalla additional magistrate instructed the police to conduct an investigation with regard to how the ballot papers came to be near the school.

 

However, following the discussion elections commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya made the following comment in this regard.
