Achala receives 239,000 from prison

1,270 prison inmates received presidential pardon concurrent to today's Independence Day celebrations.

According to Prisons Commissioner General P.W. Kodippili 27 female inmates are also said to be amongst the group who received presidential amnesty today.

Inmates who received their amnesty today comprise minor offenders as well as offenders who were unable to pay their fines.

Prisons Commissioner General P.W. Kodippili speaking to our news team expressed the following views in this regard.


Meanwhile a sum of 239,000 rupees was donated to law student Achala Priyadharshini who is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The sum donated is the expense borne by the Prisons Department to provide morning & evening meals to inmates.

The donation has been intended for the purchase of a prosthetic limb for the victim.
