Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena said that the State Pharmaceutical Corporation, the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation and the Government Medical Supply Unit are collectively and directly responsible for the existing drug shortage in government hospitals.

Minister Sirisena has further instructed authorities concerned to submit a report after looking into the matter as to why there is a scarcity of drugs at government hospitals while all financial provisions have been provided by the Treasury whenever requested to purchase drugs.

In a bid to address this issue Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena states that the countries pharmaceutical drug policy would be altered so that drugs could be purchased from governments of foreign nations.

An initial agreement in this regard is to be inked between the governments of India & Bangladesh.
