Health Services Director of the Sabaragamuwa Province Dr. Kapila Kannangara states that there is a visible decrease in the number of patients who have contracted the Japanese Encephalitis virus in the Rathnapura District.

Speaking to our news team he noted that 60,000 children under the age of 10 had been administered the vaccination in a bid to combat the virus.

Until the end of last December 53 hosts who had contracted the decease were reported from the Rathnapura district, while 10 out of this group had succumbed to death.

However 3 patients who have contracted the Japanese Encephalitis virus have been reported from the Kegalle district.

According to health sector officials the virus is cultured in swine, while mosquitoes serve as its carrier.

However the Health Services Director of the Sabaragamuwa Province Dr. Kapila Kannangara added that a programme has commenced to inoculate swine against the virus as well.

Meanwhile Director General of the Department of Animal Production & Health

W.K. De Silva notes that the virus is not contracted through the consumption of

pork.
