Hindu devotees across the world will celebrate Maha Shivarathri tonight.

Devotees on Mahashivratri throng to temples and holy shrines to offer prayers and please Lord Shiva.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a message in view of Maha Shiva Rathri stated that hindu devotees in Sri Lanka have peacefully co existed throughout centuries with other religions.

The President states that unity and understanding was of great importance in a peaceful era.

Prime Minister D M Jayarathna in his Maha Shiva Rathri message stated that his hope was to see a cordial bond between all races in the country.
