The 34 Indian fishermen who arrested for violating Sri Lanka’s maritime borders are due to be produced before the magistrate of Kites today.
The group was placed under arrest around 3 nautical miles away from the island of Delft along side 5 multi-day fishing crafts last morning.
Arrested by navy officials initially, the group was later handed over to the police.
Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said Sri Lanka has been told to speedily release the 53 Indian fishermen arrested by the navy on Wednesday and Thursday.
Making a statement in the Rajya Sabha, Khurshid said the government conveyed its view to Sri Lanka’s deputy high commissioner after summoning him to the foreign ministry.
