The Maththala Mahinda Rajapaksa International Air Port, the islands second international airport which marks a pivotal point in the history of the country was inaugurated by President Mahinda Rajapaksha today.

An A-340 aircraft carrying a convoy of VIP’s including President Mahinda Rajapaksa landed on the tarmac of the Maththala Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport at the auspicious time of 10.54 am, amidst the chanting of Seth Pirith.

Subsequently operations of the Maththala International Airport began.

That was the manner in which the first flight to arrive at the Maththala air port was received.

Construction work on the Maththla International air port commenced on the 27th of November 2009.

Constructed in as much as little time as 4 years, the tarmac of the Maththala International air port is able to handle 9 to 11 flights simultaneously.

The second phase of the airport will comprise of flyover bridges as well as a terminal which could handle 20 aircraft.

4 aircraft belonging to Sri Lankan, Air Arabia and Fly Dubai airlines landed at the Maththala International Airport today with the first flight being Air Arabia’s D90-508.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who subsequently addressed those who were gathered declared the 18th of March as the National Civil Aviation Day.

President Rajapaksa also recalled how previous leaders had attempted to sell Sri Lanka’s national carrier.

Moreover President Mahinda Rajapaksa also replied to allegations regarding goods from the Katunayaka International Airport being shifted to Mathala.
