The ministry of health has decided to terminate the employment of the junior substitute health workers who supported the strike of the minor staff of the Colombo National Hospital.

The ministry stated that the employment of substitute health workers who reported to work yet refrained from their duty were terminated in this manner.

The strike which was begun in protest against a transfer given to former chairman of the All Island Health Services Union D. S. Somarathne by the state services commission and has continued for 3 days.

However, the secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka stated that the transfer will take place regardless.

Hospital services were disrupted to a minor degree due to the strike today.

Soldiers of the Sri Lankan army were deployed at the hospital to cover the duties of the minor staff and the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court had issued orders yesterday to the trade unions to refrain from courses of action that would inconvenience patients.

However, Senior DIG Anura Senanayaka arrived at the hospital grounds to remove the employees from the building they were in and this lead to a tense situation.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Health Services Trade Union Alliance P. B. Wickramasinghe stated that despite all obstacles the strike will continue.
