Friday, 05 April 2013 - 13:16

The Ministry of External Affairs has issued notice to the relevant high commissions to remain vigilant with concern to the escalating tension in the Korean peninsula.

Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Karunathilleke Amunugama noted that the Sri Lankan consulate in Southern Korea as well as the Sri Lankan embassy in China had been requested to maintain vigilance over the developing situation.

Sri Lanka is on alert over the threat posed to South Korea from North Korea and will repatriate Sri Lankans in that country if the need arises.

Foreign Employment Ministry secretary Karunarathne Amunugama said that so far there is no danger to the Sri Lankans working in South Korea.

Over 20,000 Sri Lankans are employed in South Korea and the Ministry says the government is closely following the developments after North Korea threatened to carry out a nuclear attack on its neighbor.
