2 Lions and a Lioness for the Hambantota safari park

Tuesday, 23 April 2013 - 19:19

Botanical Garden and Public Recreational Affairs Ministry has planned to bring two lion cubs from Germany and a lioness from South Korea.

Botanical Garden and Public Recreational Affairs Ministry Secretary Willie Gamage said the trio will be brought by the end of May and exhibited at the proposed safari park at Hambantota.

There are currently six lions housed in Dehiwala Zoo, and the mating among the members of the same family has caused genetic weaknesses among the new cubs. Therefore the new animals will be used for breeding purposes as well.

According to Dehiwala Zoo sources, an affiliated zoo will be built in Piliyandala in order to reduce the congestion at Dehiwala zoo.
