11 LTTE suspects, out of a group of illegal immigrants who remain in the United Arab Emirates, have received refugee status in America.

The group had set sail from India by boat last October, to seek asylum in Australia.

Later their boat broke down in international waters and a Singaporean ship rescued the group and took them to the port of Jebel Ali in Dubai.

After the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees intervened in the incident and determined the legitimacy of their claims for asylum, 7 were deported to India, 8 others were sent to Sweden and 1 went to America.

19 others are still waiting in Dubai, and the UAE government has decided to not deport them to Sri Lanka.
