Former Dep. Commissioner instrumental in islands biggest monetary scam commuted prison sentence

Deputy Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department A.W. Abeypitiya who conceded chargers held against him in a 3.9 billion rupee VAT fraud scandal, was commuted a 14 month prison sentence with rigorous imprisonment.


According to our court correspondent Abeypitiya was also fined rupees 500,000 by Colombo Chief High Court judge Kumudini Wickremesinghe.


The 11th defendant of the case S. Ashroff was fined 60 million rupees alongside 11 months of rigorous imprisonment.


The Attorney General filed litigation against 14 suspects with connection to a VAT fraud scandal which took place at the Department of Inland Revenue from the 15th of November 2004 to December 2004 the same year.
