Heavy rain expected this evening; 5 districts affected; sluice gates of 3 reservoirs opened.

Heavy showers and wind currently prevailing in the island have mostly hit five districts and 23 thousand 2 persons in Colombo, Gampaha, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts were affected.

Deputy Director of the National Disaster Center Pradeep Kodipillai said that one house was destroyed and six others damaged by rain and wind last few days.


Meanwhile the Department of Irrigation warns the residents in the feeding areas of Parakrama Samudra, Veheragala and Lunugamvehera reservoirs to be cautious as the sluice gates of the three reservoirs have been opened.

Pradeep Kodipillai requested the users of these rivers to be take extra care during this period.

Meanwhile Department of Meteorology states that the current wet weather would continue today evening too in several areas of the island.

Meteorologist on duty Jeevan Karunarathne said that strong thunder and lightning could develop in the evening.
