Heavy rains affect Over 84,000 in Colombo and Gampaha districts.

Heavy showers and wind currently prevailing in the island have mostly hit five districts and 84 thousand persons in Colombo, Gampaha, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts.


Deputy Director of the National Disaster Center Pradeep Kodipillai said that one house was destroyed and six others damaged by rain and wind in the last few days.




Meanwhile the Department of Irrigation warns the residents in feeding areas of the Parakrama Samudra, Veheragala and Lunugamvehera reservoirs to be cautious as the sluice gates of the three reservoirs have been opened.


Janaki Meegasthanna of the Department of Irrigation requested the users of these rivers to be extra vigilant during this period.




Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology states that the current wet weather would continue this evening too in several areas of the island.


Meteorologist on duty Jeevan Karunarathne said that strong thunderstorms and lightning could develop late evening.
