The government is drawing plans to introduce a new act before parliament which will enable those who are displaced in the countries North to cast their ballots during the upcoming provincial polls.

The proposal in this regard which was presented to parliament by Minister Rauff Hakeem, if sanctioned would enable displaced persons in the North since 1983 to cast their ballots in their original places of settlement.

According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice, if a displaced individual is able to prove his or her status as IDP, their names would in turn be included in a special voters name list.

Meanwhile, various views are being expressed by political parties with regards to the upcoming Northern Provincial polls.

UNP MP & Party General Secretary Thissa Aththanayeke who addressed a gathering in Manikhinna today observed that if the government fails to host the upcoming Northern polls appropriately, such a situation would give rise to a myriad of issues.

Meanwhile certain political parties are of the opinion that polls in the North should be held subsequent to a revision on the 13th amendment to the constitution which withdraws police & land powers vested within the Northern provincial council.

The following are views expressed in this regard by General Secretary of the UNP MP Thissa Athanayeke, Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath, Leader of the DNA Sarath Foseka & JHU Leader Venerable Omalpe Sobhitha Thero.
