Heavy rain hit Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mulathiv districts; A request to change the name of Cyclone Mahasen.

The Meteorology Department said the Cyclonic Storm Mahasen in the South-east Bay of Bengalle was centered about 650 kilo meters to the East of Mullaitivu as at yesterday noon and added the storm will intensify further and most likely move in the North-westward direction.


As such the coastal areas extending from Jaffna to Hambantota via Batticaloa will experience strong winds, rough conditions and intermittent rain.


Deputy Director of the Met department S R Jayasekara requested the Navy and fisher folk not venture into the seas on the East coast.




He further said Under the influence of the system fairly strong South-westerly winds can be expected over Sri Lanka and the neighbourhood.




Meanwhile Department of Meteorology has made a request from the South Asian Regional Specialized Meteorology Center in New Delhi to change the name of the present cyclone ‘Mahasen’ that is currently active in the Bay of Bengal.


Director General of the Meteorology Department S.H. Kariyawasam told our news team that Chief Prelate of the North Central Province Venerable Siri-ketha Siri-seevali Nayake Thera also lodged a protest against the naming of the cyclone Mahasen, saying that, that was an ancient Sinhala king who contributed immensely for the development of irrigation industry in this country.


The Disaster Management Center states that 5 districts were affected due to heavy rain, lightning, wind, floods and earth slips.


2 deaths were reported and 232 persons have been displaced and another 1720 were affected in the districts of Kandy, Matale, Gampaha and Badulla due to the existing rough weather condition.
