Meanwhile, the chairwoman of the Eastern provincial council adjourned the council session till the 18th of June following the presentation of a proposal by the opposition members requesting the withdrawal of the increased electricity tariffs.

 

Speaking to our news team Opposition leader of the Eastern provincial council Daya Gamage made the following statement regarding the heated situation that arose in the provincial council.

 

 

Minister of Education in the Eastern Province, Wimalaweera Dissanayaka also expressed the following views to our news team with regard to the tense situation that arose at the Eastern Provincial Council session today.

 

 

The students, lecturers and the non academic staff of the Peradeniya University also staged a protest as the Joint Trade Union Alliance demanding the increased electricity tariffs be withdrawn at the Galaha junction today.

 

The chairman of the Joint Trade Union Alliance, D. G. Abeyratne spoke to our news team and expressed the following views.

 

 

Meanwhile, the Government Information Department issuing an announcement with regard to the token strike stated that the attendance of government employees rose to 93.5% as opposed to a normal working day.

 

The announcement issued by the GID also states that the operations of schools, hospitals and work sites carried on without an issue, and that was of special significance.
