A tense situation arose today in the Nawalapitiya Township when estate laborers attached to the Brohil estate engaged in a protest blocking access to routes.
Protesters opposed a group of government officials who were accompanied by police, whose purpose was to survey the estate based on a court order.
The protest which saw the participation of around 200 estate workers heated up with arrival of women who pleaded before officials stating that they had been occupants of the estate for over 100 years which was managed by the Janatha Estate Development Board.
However subsequent to the arrival of officers attached to the Nawlapitiya police a heated exchange of words took place.
The strike is still in effect.
