President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his Vesak message states that it is the greatest religious festival of Buddhists which celebrates the Birth, Enlightenment and Parinirvana of the Buddha.
President said further On this occasion Buddhists give importance to alms and material offerings and the observance of the principles of Buddhism to venerate the Buddha, in the same manner Buddhists would pay tribute to the living Buddha.
The Buddha's message of the Dhamma made Sri Lanka a blessed land. The discipline instilled form this teaching enabled the nation to achieve a great culture, bringing worldwide honor and respect to Sri Lankans as a nation.
With a State policy that is based on honoring the teachings of the Buddha and a nation rich in these principles, President said everyone work with determination and unlimited endeavour to build a land of dignity.
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in his Vesak message said The Vesak festival is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world with merciful thoughts to mark the Birth, Enlightenment and the Passing Away after preaching the doctrine Buddha realized to the whole world with unlimited kindness of the Samma Sambudu.
