Petroleum Industries Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that preparations have been made to restart the operations of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery as a crude oil tanker is expected to dock Colombo port tonight.

Sapugaskanda Refinery which had used crude oil from Iran was closed recently due to fuel supply shortage following the US sanctions on Iran oil.

Sapugaskanda refined Iran crude oil and produced 50 thousand barrels of diesel and petrol daily before the US imposed sanctions on Iran oil.

Later testes were carried out to check whether crude oil from other countries be used to produce fuel at Sapugaskanda, and stocks were ordered from Oman.

In the meantime, the ministry is also exploring the possibility to use crude oil from Nigeria.
