The Press trust of India reports that the leader of the DMK M. Karunanidhi today requested the Indian Central Government to provide citizenship to over 100 thousand Sri Lankan Tamils living in India as refugees.

Karunanidhi stated that continuous efforts were made to provide citizenship to the Eelam Tamils living as refugees when DMK was in power.

He further stated that recently, the United States of America has decided to provide citizenship to 260 thousand Indians living in that country without any relevant documents and it is their similar wish to request from the Centre to come forward and provide citizenship to the Sri Lankan Tamils living in the country ensuring their permanent safety.
